The Mount Athos Library of Lemnos, given the exhaustion of the present work by the trade and taking into account the exceptional importance for the ecclesiastical and cultural history of Lemnos of this most important study recording its churches and extra-churches, undertook, with the consent of the authors of the publication, the digital presentation of the volume and its free offer, through its website, to the Lemnian public.

Foreword of the Federation of the Associations of Lemnos

The attempt to trace, record, and stud y the sacred sites of our island was an extremely laborious one. The Federation of the Associations of Lemnos took the decision to support this attempt, despite the difficulties it had to encounter. This decision was a top priority, within the frame of our effort to preserve, conserve and promote the cultural legacy of Lemnos. The numerous churches and chapels, undivided part of the landscape of Lemnos, are unique historical and architectonic monuments with imposing dimension s and remarkable morphological particularities. Unfortunately, there were no researchers, until now, devoted enough to this exhaustive stud y. Synchronously symbols and centers of social and religious life of the island in the last centuries, they were assimilated within the historical background, with its hazards and major events. Our de cision found its urgenc y in the fact that, in the name of a wrongfully understood revival trend, man y of these monuments became "victims", lately, of restoration works and arbitrary interventions that altered their morphology and characteristics. The work engaged Archeologists, Historians, Architects, Photographers and a good number of our friends for four years. We, ourselves, had to stroll repeatedly our island in search of historical testimonies of our folkloric treasures, in danger of fading and eventually disappearing into oblivion. The documented texts and the expressiveness of the pictures included in the work offer a clear view of the religious life of the people of Lemnos, together with its traditional particularities. They consist of memories of those living in the island, as well as of our compatriots who live abroad. We warmly thank the members of the writing team, which worked generously, with no self-interest. Our admiration and gratitude go to: Aspa Aroni-Kotsali, Metaxoula Chrisafi-Zografou, Theodoros Belitsos, Nikas Sifounakis, Kaliopi Theoharidou, Christo Buloti, and the photographer Olga Vaxevaneri. We are also gratefully in debt to the members of the Central Council and of the Executive Secretariat of our Feder ation who worked together, without sparing their energy and time, for the highest value, faith and ideal they cherish the most, their homeland, the island of Lemnos. We must also mention the impeccable collaboration we had with Livani Publishing Organisation for this book. The "Etairia Archipelagos", which undertook a considerable part of the expenses, deserves our gratitude too. The two, made their love and interest, they nourish for our island, a reality. We hope that this work will trigger the interest of other researchers, so that more studies will fill in the literary scientific gap, which marked until now a serious cultural shortage.
